Asian Clams (Corbicula fluminea) are a filter feeder that removes particles from the water column. They are amazing biofilters. Of all the freshwater bivalves, they have the highest rate of filtration, up to 1.3 liters per hour, per clam.  They can handle temperatures from just above freezing to about 90 degrees. They have a life span of up to 7 years, but 3-4 years is typical.

The exterior of the shell ranges from yellow-green to light brown to nearly black with thick concentric rings, while the interior is white to light blue or light purple. They can grow up to 2 inches in diameter.

This species of freshwater clam is native to eastern Asia which were first found in the United States in 1938 in Washington state. They go by many names, Asiatic Clam, Golden Clam, Prosperity Clam, Good Luck Clam and Pygmy Clam.
